The degree field is falling from favor among our nation’s current high school students. HS students declaring an interest in these fields has been slowly declining for the last ten years, and has dropped dramatically in the last 18 months.

NRCCUA has been surveying high school students regarding college majors and career interests for almost 40 years. The downward trend of students planning to pursue a business discipline began in the year 2000, and has turned more dramatically in the last 18 months, coinciding with the significant economic and political shifts around the country. NRCCUA, through its MyCollegeOptions.org college planning program, receives input about post-secondary plans from over 2 million students each school year.

Ryan Munce, Vice President of NRCCUA, reports, “Our findings serve as a leading indicator of the future workforce and output of American college graduates in the next several years. Any time a degree category shifts like this, it is important for those that will be impacted to prepare in advance.”

This striking data shows the average decline in interest of these business career areas since the 2000-2001 school year and the sharp drop between the 2008-2009 and the 2009-2010 school years:

American Public University (APU, http://www.studyatapu.com)], a member institution of the American Public University System (http://www.apus.edu)], which provides career-enhancing master, bachelor and associate degree programs for more than 45,000 working adults around the world, will host prospective students for an all-day, first-of-its-kind virtual learning event and online admissions fair.

WHAT: EduFair, the first known live virtual admissions event, featuring detailed information on the offerings of APU’s seven schools, live online chats and interaction with APU faculty and leadership, admissions and financial aid officials, student ambassadors, and education- and career-focused resources for download. APU is hosting EduFair in conjunction with CareerBuilder.com LLC, which will promote the event through its website and provide visitors career information and opportunities.

Ninety-five percent of colleges and universities use at least one form of social media to recruit prospective students. This was among the key findings of the study, “Social Media and College Admissions: Higher-Ed Beats Business in Adoption of New Tools for Third Year,” conducted by Dr. Nora Ganim Barnes, Ph.D., Senior Fellow and Research Chair of the Society for New Communications Research and Chancellor Professor of Marketing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Eric Mattson, CEO of Financial Insite Inc., a Seattle-based research firm.

The new report is the outcome of a statistically sound study of the nation’s 4-year accredited colleges and universities. The study examined these institutions to quantify their adoption of social media tools and technologies. This is the third year that Barnes and Mattson have tracked social media adoption by the higher education sector, and theirs is the only statistically sound longitudinal study of its kind. The findings are based on 478 interviews and are valid within the range of +/- 4%.

The research shows that colleges and universities continue to embrace social media as their adoption of blogging again outpaces both the Fortune 500, 22% of which have a corporate blog, as well as the Inc. 500, where 42% have a corporate blog. Meanwhile, this latest research shows that 51% of colleges and universities’ admissions offices maintain a blog for their schools.

The study’s key findings include:


95% of college admissions offices use at least one form of social media; a 10% increase over 2008 and 34% growth over 2007.
Usage increased for nearly every social media tool included in the study.
Social networking is the most common form of social media used by colleges and universities, with 87% of admissions departments using it.
59% of colleges’ and universities’ admission departments have a Twitter account
51% of colleges’ and universities’ admission departments have a blog. Almost all of those using a blog are using other forms of social media as well.
46% are using online video to deliver virtual tours of campuses, virtual visits to the dorms and sample lectures from the faculty.
38% of colleges’ and universities’ admission departments use message boards; 22% use podcasts and 13% use wikis. (Many respondents report that students and faculty often use wikis to collaborate on projects, but this is not a commonly used tool for recruitment.)
91% of respondents consider social media to be important to their recruitment strategies, a 3% increase over 2008

“There is continued evidence of enthusiasm and eagerness to embrace these new communication tools, and there is also evidence that these powerful tools are being utilized more effectively each year,” stated Barnes.

“Schools using social media are clearly studying the ‘rules of engagement’ in the online world in order to maximize their effectiveness at recruiting prospective students,” added Mattson.

How University Admission Works

How University Admission Works

Most Universities accept applications up until sometime between December 15 and February 1 for the next fall semester. (Some universities accept applications as early as the summer before a student’s senior year.)

Some universities have what is known as rolling admissions, which means that they will notify you of your status (acceptance or rejection) in about two to three weeks from when your application is received. Hard-to-get-into schools, such as Duke, usually have two deadlines — early decision (for those students who have made the university their very top choice) with a deadline somewhere between November 15 and December 15, and regular decision, with a deadline somewhere between December 15 and February 1. Early acceptances reach students by mid-December, and a binding agreement between students and Duke is reached — basically, if you get in “early decision,” you’re supposed to go there. (Early admission allows colleges and universities to go ahead and enroll 25 percent to 45 percent of the incoming class.) The remaining admissions notices are sent out by early April.

Let’s take a look at the admissions process employed by Duke to get a better feel for the way it works.

It all starts with 14,000 applications in the mailroom. (Considering all the different parts of an application, this means well over 100,000 separate pieces of paper.) All of the pieces must be sorted and ordered and put into file folders, so that everything is in the right place in the right order. Each complete application is then evaluated by one of 15 to 20 “first readers” — temporary professional staff (former admissions officers, faculty spouses, alumni, graduate students). These applications are randomly distributed.

Applications then receive a second full evaluation by the staff member responsible for the region of the country in which the applicant lives. So each application is evaluated at least twice. The strongest 5 percent to 7 percent of the pool (as defined by all parts of the application, not just the academic and quantifiable parts) then comes directly to the director of undergraduate admissions — Guttentag — for review. Most of the time, if both the first and second readers recommend an admit, the student will be admitted. But not always. Guttentag reserves the right to have a student discussed in selection committee.

The weakest quarter to third of the applicant pool (again, as defined by all parts of the application) then go to an associate director for review — but only if both readers recommend a “deny.” The associate director can then “sign off” on a deny. All other applicants are reviewed by a selection committee where at least three staff members and the chairperson — either the director of admissions or the senior associate director — discuss the case.

“So we literally sit around a table and talk about — often in great detail — all students in the large middle of the pool, and anyone, regardless of qualifications, who an admissions officer thinks ought to be discussed,” Guttentag says. “We ask ourselves, ‘How much impact has a student had in their school or community? What sort of impact do we think they’ll have at Duke?’ That impact can take place in the classroom, in a religious context, in the community, on a playing field or on the tenor of the university as a whole. We look to create a class that is talented and interesting, where the students are inclined to take advantage of what Duke has to offer, and where they will learn from each other. And we learn that from sitting down and really digging into an application. That is so much more than just grades and test scores and activities. It’s heart and passion and commitment and ability.”

Finally, once decisions are made on all applicants, Guttentag reviews the group as a whole and sees if any decisions should be changed. After that, decision letters are printed, reviewed for accuracy, stuffed and sent. It’s a very detail-oriented, high volume, labor-intensive process — which is why Duke admissions takes three months to do it! The whole process is designed to be personal and to consider each applicant both as an individual and as part of the whole applicant pool. “We never limit ourselves to a specific number of students from a state or high school. We never admit anyone we don’t think can succeed and thrive at Duke,” Guttentag says.

HACU is an association of more than 400 colleges and universities across the United States committed to advancing Hispanic student higher education. How can I write an impressive college or university Admissions Essay?

Many of you will now be at a stage in your education where you are thinking about going to college and/or university for the value that it may give to your future career direction due to the need for the further qualifications required for certain jobs in areas as diverse as sport and film and law and accountancy to prepare you for working in these areas.

Therefore, an admissions essay is written by a potential student as part of some college or university admissions processes in order to be able to filter out the best candidates. This is because an admissions essay can be invaluable for allowing the administration of the institution that you are applying to will then be able to get to know much more about an individual student than what more generic application forms can provide. 

And yet the rules in relation to the admissions essay are not absolute.

The importance college and university admission reviewers place upon a potential future student’s admissions essay can vary greatly from one institution to another. This is because whilst some institutions place little or no importance on the nature and scope of this kind of essay writing, others place much greatest importance on this kind of essay writing. Nevertheless, it has come to be commonly understood that liberal arts colleges place a great deal more importance on the value of an admissions essay than major universities – although, of course, there is no absolute rule. 

But what about the admissions essay itself?

Generally it has come to be recognised that the majority of colleges and universities that require an admissions essay from each of their potential future students will choose one or more topics for their applicants to write about. However, it is also to be appreciated that there are some other colleges and universities that have an ‘open topic’ policy in place meaning the applicant can write on any subject they choose – although some of the most typical topics include career aspirations, academic strengths and weaknesses, past experiences, along with the reasons for applying.

The writing of the admissions essy is clearly not a task to be taken lightly – it could be the difference between your getting into the institution you want to get into to further your career and having to resort to your second choice.

With this in mind, I would advise you to make sure that you make sure you deal with the following basic steps in your admissions essay regardless of the subject that you are planning to study (unless of course you are given guidance from your prospective institution that you clearly MUST adhere to) since you need to introduce yourself and explain why you are an appropriate candidate for studying your chosen subject at a given institution.

But what do you need to do for the admissions essay writing process?

When writing your admissions essay you may wish to consider the following areas -

Consider an appropriate theme – May be you could first make a list of all of your experiences and interests at first and then try to find a connection between the different items on the list – although of course you will usually need to emphasise why you should be accepted onto the course by distinguishing yourself as superior to other applicants in your admissions essay.

Use the appropriate tone – There is usually a need to be balanced or moderate, but with a serious and ambitious tone. Regardless of whether you are discussing positive or negative experiences, there is a need to sound open-minded and use a neutral tone. Moreover, you must not sound too casual or formal by portraying confidence with an active voice in your admissions essay.

Writing in the first person – Although most of us are taught essay writing that avoids using ‘I’, ‘we’, or ‘my’, you are encouraged to speak in the first person on your personal statement that may or may not be part of your admissions essay. This is because you must make sure your work sound personal and active – you should also avoid overusing ‘I’ and also include ‘my’ and ‘me’ along with transition words like ‘however’ and ‘therefore’.

Discuss your research interests – There is no need to include a specific and concise dissertation topic in your personal statement since you should only express yourself in broad terms within your field. You must discuss your research interests to compare the degree of similarity in research interests between you and the faculty member you wish to work with in your admissions essay. Of course admissions committees are aware your interests will change over time and so they do not expect you to provide them with a detailed description of your research interests but merely your academic goals relevant to the proposed field of study.

Unique experiences or qualities – All of us have qualities that may distinguish us from other individuals so may be look to make a list of all your qualities and think of how you have used them previously in your admissions essay. Discuss those that will make you stand out but are still connected to your chosen subject and even where you do not have many experiences related to your subject, try to make your other experiences relate to your chosen subject. By way of illustration, if you want to study psychology but only have experience working in a supermarket, find a connection between psychology and the supermarket that show your interest in and knowledge of the subject to depict yourself as unique in your admissions essay.

Faculty members – It may also be beneficial to state who you will be interested in working with at your chosen institution depending on the guidelines for admission essays – so do your research. This is because this will very often make it a lot easier for the admission committee to determine whether your interests match with the faculty members you want to work with. Remember to mention more than one professor because mentioning only one may decrease your chances of being accepted onto a course – also contact professors and find out if they are accepting new students before applying to help prepare you for this aspect of your admissions essay.

Volunteer and Job Experiences – Only mention volunteer and employment experiences that are relevant to your field of study or have helped you develop or acquire a skill necessary for your field of interest in your admissions essay – this may be useful in your personal statement accompanying your application regardless.

Moreover, before you even consider handing in your admissions essay to your chosen institution, I would advise you to run through the following checklist of points of consideration that you must consider whether you have effectively fulfilled -

(a) If you are already studying at a school, college or university, have you got feedback from one of your teachers on your admissions essay?

(b) Do you believe that the admissions essay you have written addresses the question or topic?

(c) Is your admissions essay positive rather than negative about you?

(d) Do you reflect your strengths to the reader in your admissions essay?

(e) Is your admissions essay written and expressed concisely?

(f) Have you used blocked paragraphs for your admissions essay have?

(g) Have you left a line between each paragraph to make your admissions essay look neater?

(h) Is the grammar and spelling you have used for your admissions essay appropriate?

(i) Have you personally proofread your admissions essay?

(j) Does your admissions essay discuss your goals and plans for the future?

(k) Does you admissions essay show how you are a good fit for the subject and the institution?

(l) What skills do you have to offer the institution in your admissions essay?

(m) Have you been formal in your admissions essay and avoided being overly personal?

(n) Have you avoided excuses for poor grades and bad experiences in your admissions essay?

(o) Avoided rambling and too much detail in your admissions essay in keeping with the word count?

(p) Discussed relevant academic, volunteer, and employment experiences in your admissions essay?

(q) Have you distanced yourself from what you have written to see whether your admissions essay is suitably enticing for a reader?

(r) Have you carried out research into this area on an admissions essay?

Then, having checked your work on your admissions essay against the points made in the above checklist, you should be much better placed to then produce something that is suitably impressive for the administration of a prospective institution.

Lee’ Dozens of national educational organizations will gather next week to collaborate on how to achieve program and funding growth in light of the current economic and political climate at the third annual Cooperative Education Research Summit. This important meeting will be held on March 2, 2010 at the Marriott Fairview Park in Falls Church, VA.

Representatives from educator associations, student organizations, and community action groups are scheduled to attend. Guest speakers this year include Congressman Timothy Bishop, Melissa Panagides-Busch, Director of the Center for Education Policy and Practice, and Richard Rossi, Chairman and Co-Founder of Envision EMI.

Hosted by the National Research Center for College & University Admissions, the summit will include sessions on communicating education research results to funders and boards, and supporting value and growth while meeting individual program goals. NRCCUA also seeks to assist educational organizations in creating new value with their existing resources and programs, and providing information new educational funding opportunities through the Reinvestment and Recovery Act & Department of Education.

The missions of both NRCCUA and all of the educational organizations involved have been supported for several years by the NRCCUA Cooperative Research Program, which reaches millions of students and thousands of educators in ways that were cost and logistically prohibitive in the past.

Don’t care. More or less a dozen colleges fill their seats through entrance tests and if you are genuinely interested, you should be able to get through as marks in the Class XII Board exams have minor bearing on the DU admissions method.

I am apprehensive of writing an entrance test because these are conducted only once courses are considered `hot’. I am sure my probability of clearing them are bleak given the competition.
You are correct. English Honours has become a hugely popular programme. But if you are well-versed in English literature to some extent, then you have good chances of qualifying. The test is basically meant to keep off those who don’t know what Shakespeare is known for. In the test you might be quizzed on the book that won Salman Rushdie the Booker, etc.

Do I need to fill only one centralised form for applying to any number of programmes in any number of colleges?
Yes. You may apply for any number of courses in any DU college. This also reduces the element of risk, because if you don’t get into the college of your choice, you’ll have other options available too.

There are a few exceptions, however, which require you to apply separately. These incorporate admission under sports and extra curricular activities’ quotas, or disabled students’ quota. Also, a separate form must to be filled for courses for which admis- sion is through tests, such as in Bachelor of business economics, Bachelor of mass media and mass communica- tion), Bachelor of business studies, BA in journalism (English or Hindi). And keep in mind, three colleges – St Stephen’s, Jesus & Mary and SGTB Khalsa — only allow separate and not the centralised forms.

Lee’ The Pipeline for African American Teachers (PFAAT), a program created by the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) and NRCCUA® has reached a significant milestone. This school year marks the fourth year of the program and will see participation grow to over a quarter of a million future African American educators.

Working with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Schools of Education around the country, NABSE and NRCCUA are helping to pave the way for bright, young students to pursue a career in educating America’s youth.

To date, the PFAAT participants include:

Over a quarter of a million students who report a desire to teach
Over 4,000 teachers
Dozens of HBCU Schools of Education
Thousands of colleges that have connected with these students through NRCCUA
“For the first time in NABSE’s history we have historical data on the aspirations of African American students, thanks to the partnership between The National Alliance of Black School Educators and NRCCUA. This information is extremely useful not only to colleges and universities but also advocates of our future workforce,” said Quentin Lawson, Executive Director of NABSE.

Students who participate in the pipeline receive information and resources from NABSE and NRCCUA, as well as from participating colleges and universities. The program is seeking additional funding to develop mentoring and financial support programs to improve access and achievement for participating students.

Writing essays and personal statements are crucial part of university admission application. With the ever increasing number of applicants for limited number of college seats, importance of well written coherent essays for securing admission in good universities cannot be overemphasized. Unlike from quantative metrics like GPA and other grades which judge a candidate´s academic ability, university admission essay try to judge the overall persona of the candidate.

The answer to all this question is just one, the essay should be one that impresses the assessor.

Via the essays the main aim of assessors is to judge your ability to think logically. An essay should be sequenced in a logical fashion which supports a smooth flow of thought. Abrupt breaks in the passage do not reflect well on your stream of thinking.

Try to make the essays interesting. Run of the mill, factual essays would not give you any head start. The assessors are also trying to look at your creative ability. Keep the tone of the essay a conversational one. Narrate the incidences as you would to a friend. Use of humor in right places can not only make your essay interesting for the reader but can also make your essay stand out amongst host of similar ones. Using witty catchy phrases, anecdotes or funny stories can leave a lasting impression on the mind of the reader.

The goal of the candidate should be to make the make the essay memorable. Admission officers read hundreds and thousands of essays to select few. They will not remember each and every essay but if you can make your essay stand out, your chances of selection drastically go up.

Lee’ According to an annual study conducted among students by the National Research Center for College & University Admissions (NRCCUA), a substantial percentage of students significantly overestimate the cost of college, and dramatically underestimate the amount of financial aid available to them.

This survey was conducted just prior to the start of the 2008-2009 school year and included over 8,000 participants.

According to NRCCUA annual student research:


A significant number of students believe they will not have any access to financial assistance: 33.6% of students estimate that they will receive no financial aid at all, including loans, when attending a major public university.

Students rule out colleges based on cost without a complete understanding: 43% of first generation students report they would not consider a college costing over ,000 per year.

Students have a dramatic misconception about the cost of private AND public colleges: 37.5% of students estimate costs at least 50% higher than the actual average cost of attending a major public university.

NRCCUA is scheduled to reissue this study this month to measure any impact that the current economic conditions may be having on students’ perceptions of paying for college.
