Environmental graduate programs distance learning are intensive interdisciplinary programs that involve the students in social, political and educational perspectives on the environment. The range of environmental courses offered in the different universities by distance learning include environmental biology, environmental architecture/design, environmental control technologies, environmental education, environmental engineering technology, environmental health engineering, environmental psychology and environmental health. A few universities stipulate that the student opt for electives such as computer and telecommunication skills, programs in leadership, human development and family studies, enroll for an internship and submit a thesis. The programs aim to give the student theoretical foundations of environmental education and a practical means of applying the theory to daily living.

It offers a Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma program in Environmental Education and communication. It also has a full Master of Arts degree on the subject. The Institute of Global Education offers MS and PhD degrees in Integrated Ecology and Nature. The focus of the course is on building socially and environmentally responsible relationships. The degree is accredited to the West Coast University by International council for Open and Distance Education recognized by UNESCO and UNO. The University of Denver, the Nicholos school of Environment and Earth sciences, the Southern Methodist University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Florida and the University of Alabama are some of the other universities which offer environmental graduate programs distance learning.

The depth and range of environmental studies is only limited by the imagination of the student and the resources of the University. The student can skim the surface of the subject by selecting a broad based program or drill down to the depth on a single topic by selecting a specialized area of study. The student is the best judge of his area of interest.

As many have predicted, a shift is occurring in worldviews toward more concern for the environment. The popularity of Vermont Law School’s environmental public policy graduate program and their groundbreaking new Institute for Energy and the Environment are evidence that this shift is further along than expected.

Vermont Law saw an 8% increase in admissions while the national trend for law schools was a 3.9% decline. This came after the school created a new Institute for Energy and the Environment, headed by Michael Dworkin, a national leader in energy and environmental law and former chair of the Vermont Public Service Board, which houses a popular environmental public policy graduate program.

The purpose of the institute is to serve as a world resource on energy law and policy while offering advanced curriculum on energy and regulatory law. The institute will also distribute scholarly, technical and practical publications, produce forums and conferences for professional education and issue development and serve as a center for graduate research on energy issues, with an environmental awareness.

Nora Brownell, Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner, says, “Our economic and social well-being depend on better and more coordinated approaches to energy and the environment. They are not mutually exclusive as we have treated them, but require an integrated approach. I commend Vermont Law School for recognizing this and creating this institute.”

Having Michael Dworkin head up the institute is expected to raise the level of the environmental public policy graduate program. The co-director of the Energy Program at Natural Resources Defense Council, Ralph Cavanagh, says, “Michael Dworkin is the universally acknowledged environmental superstar of utility regulators. If I were looking to build a world class law school center to address these crucial issues, he would be at the very top of my list.”

The environmental public policy graduate program, a Master of Studies in Environmental Law degree (M.S.E.L.), is designed to meet the needs of students from a range of areas, including science, government, journalism, law and education. The M.S.E.L. degree program is distinguished by an interdisciplinary curriculum that encompasses environmental law, policy, ethics and science. The program offers the widest range of environmental law and policy courses of any law school in the nation and is open to environmental professionals and non-law students who seek to broaden their expertise.

Marc Mihaly, Acting Associate Dean for the Environmental Program and Professor of Law, reports, “The study of environmental policy and law gives students the fundamental tools to address the nation’s and the world’s environmental crises. Environmental law brings together policy, science and economics to address these pressing issues.”

The vast success of the environmental public policy graduate program is a testament to its quality and its relevancy in today’s evolving world. As a further sign that Vermont Law School and its students are looking to the future, a blog has been incorporated at VermontLawBlog.com that chronicles the lives of environmental law students. The goal is to function as a communication tool, allowing current students to interact with each other and prospective students to see firsthand what it is like to study at Vermont Law School.

Franklin University is proud to announce its new cooperation agreement in the Sultanate of Oman, expanding Franklin’s role as a global institution of higher learning.

In visits to Oman, Franklin University Senior Vice President for Planning and Global Programs, Klaus Haberich, met with representatives of the Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) in Muscat, Oman to sign cooperation agreements with the institution.

Under the agreement, the Franklin MBA program will be made available to students in Oman beginning in the fall term of 2010 in classes held on MCBS’ campus in Muscat, the country’s capital, largest city, and seat of government. Classes will be taught in English by a combination of Columbus-based Franklin faculty members traveling to Oman and local faculty members from MCBS and other institutions.

“This agreement with the Modern College of Business and Science will allow Franklin to participate in the rapidly growing Middle Eastern market for MBA programs, in collaboration with a highly respected and well-established institution,” Haberich said. “The signing of this agreement allows Franklin, an institution known for its expertise in providing access to career-relevant education, to strengthen its position as an exporter of high-value-added educational services, which benefits both the Ohio and the national economy.”    

The Modern College of Business and Science in the Sultanate of Oman is a private college accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education. It was established in 1996 and offers Associate and Bachelor Degrees, primarily in business administration and computer science. The Franklin MBA will be the first graduate program offered by the college. For further information on MCBS visit www.mcbs.edu.om.

Today’s announcement strengthens the University’s global presence and further distinguishes Franklin as an innovator and leader in the export of higher education. Franklin currently participates in agreements with the Wroclaw School of Banking in Poland, the University St. Kliment Ohridski-Bitola in Macedonia, the National Mining University (NMU) in the Urkaine, Okay University in Instanbul, Turkey, the University of Economics of Bratislava in Slovakia, Mangalore University in India, Sichuan University in China, and Vietnam National University in Vietnam.

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), located on San Diego’s coastline, is a Christian liberal arts college.  Originally founded as a Bible college by the Church of the Nazarene, it has expanded into one of California’s finest undergraduate and graduate Schools.  San Diego, being the ideal city for this excellent school, opened its doors to this church, and it has evolved into the university it is today.  Very few other graduate programs in San Diego offer the programs as well as character building that is available at this university.  

Being renamed several times from the early 1900’s until present day, this college was once located in Pasadena. Even then, in 1949, it had a reputation for being one of the best graduate schools. The college relocated to San Diego in 1973 and has been there ever since, located on beautiful and picturesque Point Loma off the coastline of the Pacific Ocean.

Along with the landscape that PLNU has to offer its students, there is also an exceptional Biology graduate program available at this university.  Whether you want to go back to school or continue on with your education, PLNU has one of the most flexible graduate programs in San Diego.  If you would prefer to work while you are attending graduate school, a student can create a part-time schedule that perfectly suits your needs.  If you decide to attend full time, of course that can be accommodated as well.  Also, there are summer courses that one can attend so that you can reduce the amount of time it will take to get your degree.  This does not exist in some other graduate schools.  San Diego is the perfect city for PLNU’s many great academic programs, including their exceptional Biology Graduate Program.

If you are a teacher and want a typical Biology graduate program added to the strengths of a traditional master’s program in education, then you as a master’s student at PLNU will get the best of both worlds.  This “hybrid” works very successfully at PLNU as students take courses that are a blend of science and teaching.  As students learn the concepts taught in their science courses they will understand the exact challenges facing their students.  PLNU’s interesting hybrid program makes it one of the most innovative graduate programs in San Diego.  And because of their unique position of being a Christian college teaching a science, the teacher working toward a graduate degree will learn how to address the issue of science and religion.

Rankings can only tell you so much about a school or program. Don’t choose a graduate program based on how high the program that you’re considering appears on a published list. Use your own criteria to judge whether or not a grad school is right for you.

Do some research. Ask questions. Talk to professors, current students and alumni. Know what you are getting into ahead of time. Grad school is a serious investment that isn’t to be taken lightly. It’s a decision that goes beyond national rankings.

If you want a general reference, though, grad school rankings can help you get your bearings. The following rankings have all been taken from the 2007 version of US News and World Reports America’s Best Graduate Schools (although some rankings are based on assessments completed in pervious years). Use these rankings as a guide, but don’t base your final grad school decision on a rankings list.

Law

The top five graduate programs in law are Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia and New York University.

Medicine

The top five graduate programs in medical research are Harvard, Johns Hopkins, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California-San Francisco and Washington University in St. Louis. The top five graduate programs in primary care are the University of Washington, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Oregon Health and Science University, Michigan State University-College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Massachusetts-Worcester.

Business

The top five graduate programs in business are Harvard, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania-Wharton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Sloan and Northwestern University-Kellogg.

Engineering

The top five graduate programs in engineering are MIT, Stanford, University of California-Berkeley, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.

Education

The top five graduate programs in education are Harvard, Teachers college at Columbia University, UCLA, Stand ford and Vanderbilt.

Social Sciences

English

The top three graduate programs in English are Harvard UC Berkeley and Yale.

Economics

The top five graduate programs in economics are MIT, University of Chicago, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and UC Berkeley.

Psychology

The top three graduate programs in psychology are Stanford, UC Berkeley and Michigan.

History

The top three graduate programs in history are Yale, Princeton and UC Berkeley.

Political Science

The top three graduate programs in political science are Harvard, Stanford and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Use these rankings as a starting point for further investigation. Know which schools are strong in the areas that you want to study. Shop around for a grad school that will suit your individual educational and professional goals. Investigate your options so that you know what to expect. Make campus visits. Ask about funding and research opportunities. Find out as much as you can before you get you enroll in any graduate program.

Monterey College of Law announced four new lawyers from the February 2009 California Bar Exam results released Friday, May 15. Scott Martin, Dinah Sapia, Sabina Trumble, and Meredith Wisler will be sworn-in as new California lawyers by the Honorable Thomas Wills, Monterey Superior Court Judge and graduate of Monterey College of Law. The swearing-in ceremony will be held prior to the Monterey College of Law graduation program in the outdoor courtyard at Santa Catalina School on Sunday, May 31, 2009.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the graduation program will begin at 1:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend both the swearing in ceremony and the graduation program.

Dean Mitchel Winick stated, “The February California bar exam was statistically the most difficult exam in the past 12 years. Because of the success of our four graduates, the law school achieved a 40% first-time pass rate which exceeded the state-wide overall pass rate of 33.5%. We are very proud of our new lawyers. Passing the California bar exam is one of the highest professional achievements because it is by far the most difficult bar exam in the United States.”

Find Nutrition Graduate Programs in the United States and Canada. If you’d like to achieve a Masters or Ph.D. in nutrition, you should first review admission requirements to nutrition graduate programs. Typically, prospective students must take an aptitude test prior to enrollment. Additionally, applicants to nutrition graduate programs must have earned a minimum undergraduate degree with an above average GPA.

Common studies involved in nutrition graduate programs are research in genetic and metabolic foundations (in animal and human diets), nutritional biochemistry, pathology in relation to nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, and other related subject matter.

Nutrition graduate programs that result in a Master’s (MS) degree entail in-depth coursework in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, advanced nutrition, physiology, and advanced human nutrition. In addition, students will almost always have to complete a thesis, as well as residency. Generally, nutrition graduate programs like this require a minimum of two years to complete.

Doctorate (Ph.D.) nutrition graduate programs include higher studies, doctoral dissertation research, and advanced nutrition sciences and research, among other associated courses. Ph.D. program lengths vary, but usually take between three and four years to finish successfully.

Students may also opt to participate in nutrition graduate programs with an emphasis on food science. These studies generally focus on food chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology; food processing, and supplementary research, thesis and residency. These nutrition graduate programs generally require the same amount of time and prerequisites as typical M.S. and Ph.D. courses.

University of Maryland’s Doctoral Programs Achieve Strong Rankings In New National Academies’ Study

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A long-awaited National Research Council study of Ph.D. programs at 212 of the nation’s best universities gives many University of Maryland graduate programs high marks. As many as 36 out of 56 ranked Maryland programs were among the top 25 programs in their fields based on one of the study’s two general assessment methods.

By design, the National Research Council study provides only ranges of rankings and cannot be used to establish a definitive ranking for universities or their programs. However, among the many well-rated Maryland programs were a number that were very highly rated by almost any of the analytical measures. These programs include aerospace engineering, agricultural and resource economics, comparative literature, computer science, geography, linguistics, atmospheric and oceanic science, and public policy.

"It is gratifying that our ratings by the new NRC survey are strong," said Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School Charles Caramello. "These findings confirm many other recent objective indicators of the overall excellence of our graduate programs and of the particular excellence of Maryland programs in many areas critical to the prosperity and security of our nation and the world."

The National Research Council is the operating arm of the National Academies, and this is the Research Council’s first review of graduate programs since 1995. The results of the current NRC analysis are based largely on data from 2005-2006. The study assessed overall quality for each Ph.D. program based on two different NRC methods, one that is survey based (S) and one regression based (R).

S-rankings were determined by assessing each program based on characteristics that scholars in that field say are most important. R-rankings were derived by comparing the characteristics of individual programs in a field to ratings that faculty members in that field made of random samples of programs. The S and R rankings for each program were calculated 500 times. The 5th percentile and 95th percentile rankings were reported to provide a range for both S and R rankings.

In some cases the ranges can be quite different. For example, out of 160 ranked physics programs, the physics program at the University of Maryland achieved an R-ranking of 5-21, so we can say with 90 percent confidence that, based on the R method, the program ranked somewhere between 5th-best and 21st-best in the country. Its S-ranking, meanwhile, is 23-66, so we can say that, based on this method, it is 90 percent certain that the Maryland physics program is ranked between the 23nd-best and 66th-best in the country.

In addition to these two overall rankings, the NRC report separately rates each program on: (1) research activity, (2) student support and outcomes and (3) diversity. On these measures as many as 33 Maryland programs ranked in the top 25 programs in their field in research; as many as 28 programs ranked in the top 25 programs in their field in student support and outcomes; and as many as 40 ranked in the top 25 programs in their field in diversity.

"The University of Maryland is on a steep upward trajectory toward becoming one of the world’s very best universities and the complex and rich data in this study will provide important information that we can use to continue to strengthen our educational and research programs," Caramello said.

"Of course, we will review the study’s analyses in the context of a host of important actions that the university has taken since 2005-2006 to strengthen both graduate and undergraduate education. These achievements include the implementation of a transformational new Strategic Plan, the creation of a School of Public Health and faculty enhancement that includes, most recently, 81 highly diverse and accomplished new faculty members appointed this year alone."
More Data, Less Reputation National Research Council officials contend that the new study is designed to provide a more comprehensive and scientific assessment of doctoral programs than popular ranking systems currently available. The study is data based and limits reliance on surveys of reputation.

It provides a series of illustrative ratings for individual programs based on broad measures of research activity, student support and outcomes, and diversity of the academic environment, as defined by 20 program characteristics. Research productivity is measured by characteristics such as publications, citations and grants per faculty member; and student support and outcomes are measured by characteristics such as number of PhDs awarded, time to degree, and internal and external student funding. The new system assigns different weights to those characteristics to reflect the different values that faculty in different disciplines accorded those characteristics.

Now that it has been statistically proven that college education leads to higher incomes, the question topmost in everyone’s mind is how much education does one need to succeed in the corporate world?

While the answer to that question depends on several factors, there are certain things you can consider before deciding on the level of education you’d like to pursue. For that, you should first understand the difference between undergraduate programs and graduate degrees.

An undergraduate program is a degree that can be earned after high school. The two most common types of undergraduate programs are Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees. Graduate programs, on the other hand, are advanced degrees available to those who have graduated from an undergraduate college program. Master’s and Doctoral degrees leading to a PhD are the two main graduate degree programs.

Important Differences

The first difference between the two types of degrees is the level of specialization. Depending on your program, an undergraduate degree provides a foundation in a specific field or an overview of several subjects, preparing you for different types of entry-level jobs. Graduate programs, on the other hand, look to build on that foundation. The coursework is far more intense, focused, and specialized in a graduate degree.

Students of graduate degree programs are required to contribute to classroom discussions, take up independent research work, write a thesis and defend it in front of their professors and peers.

The second factor to consider is the employment opportunity offered by both of these degrees. While there are certain professions like law, medicine, academics, etc., where a graduate degree is necessary, there are plenty of career choices open to those who have an undergraduate degree.

That said, graduate programs add value in terms of giving candidates a competitive advantage in the job market, increasing their marketability, and improving their earning potential. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, those who held a Master’s degree made ,257 per week in 2009 as compared to ,025 per week earned by those who had a Bachelor’s degree. However, the overall time commitment for a graduate degree is greater. A Master’s degree is usually for eighteen months to two years. Add to that four years for a Bachelor’s degree, and you will need to spend a minimum of six years in school if you want to pursue a graduate degree.

An undergraduate degree, on the other hand, can be earned in much less time – four years if you are going for a Bachelor’s and two years if you are pursuing an Associate’s. But your earning potential and advancement opportunities may not be the same as they would be if you were to get a Master’s degree.

Is Grad School for You?

Grad school is pretty expensive and demands a tremendous amount of hard work. Also, since most students already have a few responsibilities by the time they enter graduate school, you may have to juggle several commitments simultaneously.

Therefore, you should consider well ahead of time if grad school is for you by evaluating your career goals, academic inclination, monetary situation, and personal circumstances.

While some students prefer to headlong straight into a graduate program after completing their undergraduate degree, others prefer to work for a few years and then enter grad school. This has several advantages.

First, you will be able to figure out if you really enjoy working in your chosen field before committing more years to education in that area. Next, you’ll carry your valuable industry experience to the classroom and be able to draw much more out of your coursework.

You will also have a few years of savings to put into college tuition and can probably lower your loan dependence. Finally, if you realize this was not the career you’d been dreaming of, a graduate degree in a different field will help you make a switch to another career.

There are benefits of both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Whichever one you choose, make sure you’ve made the decision with your eyes open.

The American Dental Associations Commission

on Dental Accreditation (CODA) has appointed Joseph R. Cohen, D.D.S., to the

position of Site Visitor for Orofacial Pain and TMD graduate programs.

“The C.O.D.A. team will evaluate the graduate programs for TMD and Orofacial

pain to make sure they meet the newly established training standards for dentists

who treat TMD and Orofacial Pain. This will help to establish optimal treatment

options for those living with the discomfort associated with Orofacial Pain”, said

Cohen.

Dr. Cohen will play an instrumental role in the evaluation of Orofacial

Pain/TMD graduate programs, helping to determine if they meet or exceed the

rigorous standards set by The American Dental Association, while also

determining if an individual program is ready for accreditation.

Orofacial Pain and TMD was recently approved as an “emerging specialty” by the

American Dental Association, and includes conditions that involve the

temporomandibular joint and the muscles that are used to chew known as the

masticatory muscles. Patients with conditions associated with Orofacial pain or

TMJ, often experience symptoms that include severe jaw and tooth pain, head

and neck pain as well as migraine headaches.

Joseph R. Cohen, DDS is the founder of Southwest Pain Management

Associates, headquartered in Phoenix Ariz., where he focuses on the treatment

of Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders. Dr. Cohen is a

diplomat of the American Board of Orofacial Pain.
