1. Tragedy at Rutgers University
The nation was shocked when Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide in September. This happened after his roommate and a friend filmed a sexual encounter between Clementi and another male student and then allegedly posted it online. His death proved to be a catalyst for both educational and gay rights advocates who saw Clementi as yet another victim of homophobia and school bullying.
2. Duke’s Infamous Sex List
Karen Owen, a Duke University alumna, was thrust into the national spotlight several months ago when a document she had passed on to a couple of friends went viral. The document, in PowerPoint format, gave detailed information about her sexual exploits with other Duke students, including several football and lacrosse players. This deeply embarrassed and soiled Dukes good name.
3. Columbia Fraternities Major Drug Bust
Three Columbia University fraternities (Alpha Epsilon Pi, Pi Kappa Alpha and Psi Upsilon) were placed on suspension in December after several members were caught dealing illegal drugs as part of a major city-wide crime operation. According to the Columbia Spectator, Dean of Student Affairs Kevin Shollenberger said Greek organizations can be suspended if determined as ” ‘necessary to promote the best interest’ of the chapter and the University.”
4. Belmont Coach Forced to Resign Due to Sexuality
Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee allegedly fired its women’s soccer coach due to her sexuality. Lisa Howe claims she was forced to resign after announcing her plans to have a child with her same-sex partner. Belmont University released a statement saying the university and Howe reached a “mutual agreement” for her resignation. It seems this college will be branded for their lack of acceptance in our modern world.
5. University of Michigan’s Student President Harassed
Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell was fired from his position in November after publicly criticizing and stalking University of Michigan’s first openly gay student body president, Chris Armstrong. Shrivell’s now-famous blog described Armstrong’s agenda as “radical” and “homosexual”, and even suggested that the he was trying to recruit college freshman into “turning gay.”
6. Girls Gone Wild At Miami University
Destruction of public property, underage drinking and sexual hijinks were just some of the many charges lobbied at Miami University sororities this last spring. The Ohio college eventually suspended the Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta and Pi Beta Phi chapters following reports of their inappropriate behavior at their spring formals which included vomiting and urinating all over the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati.
7. Student Majorly Scams Harvard
Harvard University was tricked by former student Adam Wheeler who not only duped the university into granting him admittance, but also got them to give him thousands of dollars in scholarship money. Wheeler pleaded guilty to charges of larceny and forgery, among others, and has been given 10 years. This definitely tramples a little on Harvard’s reputation.
8. University of California San Diego Protests
UC San Diego battled racial tensions last spring after members of its Pi Kappa Alpha chapter threw an off-campus cookout and prompted guests to “dress ghetto.” The event spawned an outcry from students and civil rights leaders, who believed the party was racist. Soon after, UCSD’s student TV station ran a student group’s defense of the event, which prompted the Black Student Union to declare “a racial emergency.”
9. Black Sorority Uses “Slave” Tactics in Hazings
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, has been under fire in recent months at two different universities for hazing incidents. Six young women from Rutgers University were arrested and eventually charged with hazing after a pledge made a hospital visit and claimed she had been beaten 200 times. I guess you never know what tactics Greek Life will use next in hazings.
10. Columbia University Professor Admits to Incest
A political science professor from Columbia University was thrown into the news when he was accused of incest charges. David Epstein, 46 years old, was involved in a 3-year relationship with his adult daughter. While Epstein insists the relationship was consensual, this only adds to Columbia’s troubles this year.

Student College Grants offered by the federal governments
There is hot news for the ones aiming for a college career; but could not do it because of economical hazards. Government grants will provide the opportunity. Students can obtain college grants which provide money to compensate for tuition and other expenses during college career. In the economic climate of today, a college degree is worth shooting for and the college grant gives you the right chance if you cannot afford it on your own.
Federal College Grants are offered up to those who are needy. Yet it is different based upon the area of study and level of academic excellence. Deprived scholars who can never aspire of going after academic classes are benefitted by the college grants. These are given on a semester or annual basis. In some instances, the scholarship extended to the pupils is not needed to be returned back like the Pell Grant Program which is a federal college grant. Painted Hall – Royal Naval College Greenwich

Built for charitable public purpose rather than to glorify personal status, the Old Royal Naval College has been a place much enjoyed and admired since it was established by Royal Charter in 1694 for the relief and support of seamen and their dependents.
Sir Christopher Wren planned the site and during the first half of the eighteenth century various illustrious architects, such as Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart completed the design. As the nineteenth century wore on, with peace established, numbers of Pensioners declined and the Hospital finally closed in 1869. Soon after this the Royal Naval College moved in heralding a new beginning for the site as a naval training centre for officers from around the world. In 1998 the Royal Navy departed for its new base at Shrivenham and responsibility for the College passed to the newly established Greenwich Foundation.
There is a rich history to the site even before Wren’s Hospital. In Tudor times Greenwich Palace, reputedly Henry VIII’s favourite palace and the birthplace of Elizabeth I, lay on the site.
In 1873 the Royal Naval College (RNC) – later known as the ‘Navy’s university’ – moved in, heralding a new era of scientific training. The RNC combined the functions and resources of the former Naval College at Portsmouth and the School of Naval Architecture and Marine engineering, which moved from South Kensington. This new approach did not meet with universal approval and it was some time before the College’s contribution was recognised. In 1919 the Naval Staff College was also opened on the site.
During the Second World War the College’s major task was the training of ‘hostilities-only’ officers. Altogether nearly 27,000 of them, including 8,000 members of the WRNS, passed through Greenwich. But the war had a more tangible impact too: the Admiral’s House was badly damaged by a direct hit from a German bomb in 1943, and another hit the front of the King Charles building.
The Navy’s Department of Nuclear Science and Technology opened in 1959, and JASON, the department’s research and training reactor was commissioned in the King William building in 1962. From 1983 the relocated Joint Services Defence College also occupied much of the King Charles building.
The Royal Navy finally left the College in 1998, and formally handed over management to the new custodians, the Greenwich Foundation.
Where Did President Ronald Reagan Go to College?
Ask anybody: “Who are the great men in human history?” Likely you will hear names such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, or perhaps even Ronald Reagan. What do these men have in common? What made them great? They were successful because they were powerful, and with this power they changed the course of history by their heroic actions, or by ruling countries or even whole continents. Ronald Reagan was born in 1911. I have said before I am not a Republican nor a Reagan fan, but it is significant history for northern Illinois and needs to be talked about. Today we see the Ronald Reagan Birthplace building. He was born in the second floor apartment of a commercial building in downtown Tampico, Illinois. Where did president Ronald Reagan go to college ? The Reagan’s lived in the second floor apartment. For a case of pareidolia, notice the apparition in the window, who could that be? From 1915-1919 the structure housed a bakery and from 1919-1931 a bank, First National Bank. Today the first and second floor have been restored. The first floor is a spot-on recreation of a 1920s bank that incorporates original elements from the building’s stint as a bank, such as the vault. The second floor is done as a period apartment from the era when the Reagan’s occupied the space. Interestingly, the apartment features a skylight in the center of its main room and is decorated to the period when the Reagans lived there, although none of the original Reagan furnishings are there. Did Ronald Reagan go to college ? The Graham Building matches up with the harmony of the rest of the district

he building is very similar to the other structures in the Main Street Historic District. It is two stories with three upper floor, flat-headed windows. The Graham Building also has a metal cornice which closely matches the cornice lines of the adjacent structures, contributing to the overall architectural harmony of the historic district. When I went it was July, 105 degrees, and the woman inside, a volunteer, seemed truly glad to see me. In fact she chased me down on the hot street. Initially, when I tugged at the door, I couldn’t get it to open, I think she thought I was inept but it really wouldn’t open. But she came outside to get me, eventually she gave me a free tour of the bank, the apartment and told me numerous tales about the Reagan family. Even recalling when Ronald Reagan actually visited the birthplace during the 1980s or 1990s or some such. It was very interesting and for her kindness I bought a magnet and donated five dollars to the museum. As president, Reagan implemented bold new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed “Reaganomics,” included deregulation and substantial tax cuts implemented in 1981. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt, took a hard line against organized labor, and ordered military actions in Grenada. He was reelected in a landslide in 1984. Reagan’s second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, namely the ending of the Cold War, the bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. The president had previously ordered a massive military buildup in an arms race with the Soviet Union, forgoing the strategy of détente. He publicly described the USSR as an “evil empire” and supported anti-Communist movements worldwide. He negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, resulting in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries’ nuclear arsenals. Reagan left office in 1989; in 1994 the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease earlier in the year and died ten years later at the age of ninety-three. He ranks highly among former U.S. presidents in terms of approval rating.

Is the College Admissions Process Changing?
What college will be a good match for me? Are you currently or did you ever ask yourself that question? Deciding on a college is a decision that can’t be taken lightly and a college search requires a lot of dedication and time. What makes a college a good match? There are many factors that should be accounted for when deciding on a good fit for each student. For example, academic programs, sports programs, the social scene, extra-curricular activities, and school credentials may be very important for a student. Every student should evaluate where and how far they want to go in life in order to be sure to choose a college that will allow them to fulfill all of their most wildest dreams.
With this being said, it is important that every student takes a close look at each school they are wanting to attend. If a student is planning on furthering their education by going to a graduate school or a medical school, the student should find information on the undergraduate programs at the college they are wanting to attend. If the student is planning on attending medical school, he/she should find out if the chemistry department and biology department at the college of their choice is prestigious enough for him/her to get accepted into medical school. Even so, whether or not the student is planning on attending graduate school, he/she should find out information on the undergraduate program that he/she will be attending.
What students seem to forget is that they aren’t the only ones trying to impress someone. Colleges too are constantly trying to impress their prospective students. Therefore, if students are serious about getting the best education, they should do their own research on each college they are considering. Many students forget that the process goes both ways are happy to be accepted anywhere.
Even though I have done very well academically, I don’t consider my academic performance to be a complete measure of my current or future success. Colleges realize that academics aren’t the only way to find the most motivated students who will have success in the real world. Therefore, they are always looking for better ways to learn about future prospects and the kind of character that will be added to their campus through the students they recruit.
It wasn’t too long ago when I myself went through the whole painstaking ordeal of being accepted into the college of my choice. What I enjoyed about my ordeal however, is that the college admissions officers took a look at more than just my test scores and grades. There were many of us prospective students who spent a weekend doing various activities on that college campus while college admissions officers watched us closely and interviewed many of us. By doing so, there were able to see more of who I was and not just that I had awesome test scores. (I don’t mean to brag, but, they were pretty good.) Nevertheless, I was happy with how the entire ordeal was run and that I was considered to be more than just a test score.
College admissions processes are still a work in progress. Many schools nationwide are looking for new ideas to improve the way they deal with college admissions, trying to find a way to make prospective students more than just grades and test scores. With so many applicants, it makes it very difficult for college admissions offices to look at each student in depth. A quicker way to filter through student applications would be an ideal way to better the process.
Advancements in science and technology has helped to lessen the headache of the process of admission to college for the colleges and students. Online applications have made the process much easier for students. There are also new and exciting ways for college admission officers to recruit students. College recruiting is going to be taken to the next level soon with new programs that allow students to showcase themselves to any college of their choice. For example, the Yale Admissions Officers or Harvard Admissions Officials can now recruit using online services in order to find potential students.
Students looking to be recruited now have a new resource called Zinch.com. Simplify the college admissions process and learn about each colleges requirements including all ivy league schools. It’s more than just a college search. Jason Luke is a lead fulfillment manager for ioVentures, Inc.

Electoral College Map With Numbers
Is it time to junk the Electoral College? By formulating such an arcane method of electing the executive, the founding fathers hoped to insulate the presidency from popular emotions while, at the same time, protecting thinly populated states from domination by the great cities. The College works by having the state legislatures pick people to vote for the President. Each state has the number of electors as it has representatives to the congress, both House and Senate. These were to be the most able people of the state…in theory. What quickly evolved was that each party would nominate a slate of electors. The political party that won the state’s popular vote would have their slate of electors get the right to vote for President. A “win” was considered 50% plus one vote This has been the method of electing our Presidents since the founding of the republic. There have been consequences not intended by the founders. They have shaped what kind of party system we have. The structure of elections has determined the ways campaigns are run. They have even affected the way in which our government is organized. The “winner-take-all” system also shapes the campaign. Since only one vote more than the competing party is required, there is no reason to give campaign resources to states where a particular candidate is well ahead or too far behind to compete. The battlegrounds are those states that could go either way. In a tight campaign the votes of small states become critical in putting together an electoral majority. Because a state’s entire electoral vote is determined by which party gets one vote more than the next, there is no advantage in voting for a party that will come short of that goal. Ten percent means no vote at all. It makes sense then that we have two parties because that’s the surest way to win the privilege of casting the electoral vote. While third parties might have influence at the state level, it is almost impossible to have an effect at the Presidential level. A popular-vote election means Presidential candidates no longer visiting small, closely contested states. It reduces their influence. The electoral wars will be waged only in the large cities. The changes don’t stop there. Remember, we now nominate candidates by state primaries. Electing people by a national popular vote would cause those to merge into a national primary. After all, if states no longer elect the President, why should they nominate the candidate? There’s a whole new national campaign. college map college map A popular election of the President would change that. No longer would a national campaign be necessary. A President, political scientists tell us, could be elected in the six largest TV. markets. Campaigns would be waged in the large cities and their suburbs. Rural areas would be completely ignored. That is especially true for Democrats. The parties would spend their resources in those areas where they are already strong. Political professionals know it’s easier to expand the percentage of your vote in places you’re already ahead. That is seen today. Republicans don’t waste their resources in mainly African-American areas. Nor do the Democrats campaign in strong Republican precincts. The process has become longer and more expensive. But, that’s not the end. Would a party want its candidate to be one with only, say, 20% of the vote? Probably not. A national run-off primary will evolve to insure one candidate wins 50%.. Electoral college map with numbers electoral college map with numbers
college supply list
Another problem now rears its ugly head…the national election. Recall that the Electoral College and the winner-take-all system forced the parties to campaign state by state. Since only a one-vote majority was required to carry that state, third parties found it impossible to exist. They could never have an influence. Not so with a popular vote election. Here a small party getting fifteen or twenty percent could have a large impact on who is elected. In fact, the vote could be spread among several small political parties. Would the nation be content with the President being elected with, say, 30% of the popular vote? Maybe not. There is a way around the problem. The old One-Party-Democratic-South solved it. It’s called the run-off election. Now there are four possible national campaigns: the first national primary, the run-off national primary, the national election, and the run-off national election. Another effect is one that strikes at the government itself. It’s likely that a multi-party system would evolve with elected officials from many different small ideological groups. How would the government work? Our national government is organized around two parties. Could it accommodate coalitions? There is no way to tell. All of the governments that have multi-party systems are Cabinet governments. There are built in mechanisms for bringing down the government and holding new elections when the governing coalition loses public support. Our constitution has no provision for such a circumstance. It’s possible the popular election of the President would force the U. S. to completely change its government from a Presidential to a Cabinet form. Some people argue that would be a good thing. It would, they say, make the government more responsive. They’re right. But, it would also make it unstable. Our constitution creates government that is slow to respond because the framers wanted ideas to have time for thorough review and debate before they were made into national policy.

Our mission is to find the right college or university for your son or daughter and maximize their admission potential
Calabasas, CA (PRWEB) July 9, 2008
With more high school graduates competing for limited openings in colleges, finding a college major that fits and negotiating the admission process become more vital. “Admission Zen: The Stress Free Path to Getting into College,” a newly released DVD from College Pathways, addresses a number of topics designed to give the prospective college student a distinct advantage when competing for admission, grants scholarships for college, program acceptance and more.
College Pathways, the independent college admission consultants that produced “Admission Zen,” has secured agreements with Video Library Company and Midwest Tape Inc. to distribute the DVD.
While hundreds of authors have penned lengthy tomes about college admissions research, “Admission Zen” is the first product of its kind to boil down all the essential elements into an easily-digestible, 1-hour DVD format, College Pathways President Stephen Burleigh explained.
“There are dozens of books and manuals but no DVD that incorporates student comments, graphics, animation, insider tips and specific tools for developing a successful college admission strategy,” President Stephen Burleigh said.
In addition to valuable guidance on the application process, the “Admission Zen” DVD provides prospective students with advice for getting financial aid, such as how and when to apply for grants scholarships for college or academic loan programs.
“Our mission is to find the right college or university for your son or daughter and maximize their admission potential,” said Burleigh.
Burleigh offers step-by-step guidance through the college admission/application process to parents and students throughout the United States. Through College Pathways, he offers college applicants and their families a number of college-related services, including but not limited to a personal needs assessment, admissions test preparation, a personalized college action plan and application assistance.
Visitors to College-Pathways.com can sample scenes from “Admission Zen” and explore resources for finding a college major, applying for financial aid, making an impression through college entrance essays and more.

A fairly simple website for the graphic design program at Flagler designed by Scott Jehl, a fellow designer/developer in the Boston area. It’s more about the little things in this design that get my attention as well as the focus on content. I also like this site much better than the actual Flagler College website.
